The role  

 

We’re looking for a Relief Driver to join our Transport team! 

As a Relief Driver you will cover various activities alongside any required driving duties. These include supporting the Distribution Centre to ensure safe, efficient yard operations and maintaining a secure environment for employees and visitors. You’ll operate mechanical handling equipment (MHE), including Forklift Trucks (FLT) and Shunt vehicles. Relief driving duties will be required to provide driving support in accordance with company procedures and legal requirements. You’ll also uphold the company’s values in all duties performed. 

 

For the right candidate we will consider supporting an Apprenticeship up to Cat C + E . Once fully qualified the salary for the role will be £28,329.60 per annum. 

The working week will be 40hrs Mon to Friday and over time will be available across all shifts.  

 

You must also have a minimum of a valid Cat B Licence (Car) and FLT, with a desire to develop all driving skills. 

 

What will you do as a Relief Driver at N Brown? 

  • Daily Inspections: You’ll conduct daily checks on MHE, vehicles, and equipment, reporting faults to management. 

  • Trailer Movements: You’ll safely execute and record trailer shunt movements as per procedures. 

  • Site Safety: You’ll adhere to site safety protocols, including signage and traffic light instructions. 

  • Deliveries & Collections: You’ll assist with loading/unloading and record pallet volumes. 

  • Traffic Management: You’ll manage safe pedestrian and vehicle movement within site boundaries. 

  • Contractor Oversight: You’ll ensure contractors follow site rules and safety protocols. 

  • Housekeeping & Safety: You’ll maintain a clean yard and report any Health & Safety concerns immediately. 

  • Waste Management: You’ll support the movement and loading of waste and recyclable materials. 

  • Vehicle Refuelling: You’ll refuel vehicles as per SOPs and report any issues. 

  • Reporting: You’ll submit daily trailer availability reports to the leadership team. 

  • Permit Management: You’ll authorise work permits and ensure safe areas for vehicle maintenance. 

  • Relief Driver Duties: You’ll operate HGVs to support the transport operation during periods of absence, holiday, or increased demand, ensuring all driving activities meet legal and safety standards. 

  • Teamwork: You’ll collaborate with colleagues to manage daily workflow efficiently 

 

What skills and experience will you have?  

  • You’ll be proficient in written and spoken English for effective communication. 

  • You’ll have experience in a warehouse/distribution environment or operating similar equipment is preferred. 

  • You’ll have a valid driving licence including appropriate HGV category 

  • A valid DCPC qualification is preferred but not essential 

  • You’ll have a valid Forklift Licence (Counterbalance) 

  • Yard Marshal experience is preferred 

  • Shunt driving experience preferred 

  • You’ll be a strong team player and you’ll have good communication skills 

  • You’ll have a sound knowledge of Health & Safety practices

Ways of Working 

This role is based out of our Warehouse which is located in Shaw, Oldham. We have a free on-site car park and we are just a short walk away from the local tram stop too.  The hours for this role will be Monday – Friday, 6am – 2:45pm, flexibility to work various shifts is essential to provide support when required.
