Are you looking to shape a new team, work with the latest technologies in data, and solve complex problems? We are looking for a Lead Data Engineer to help bring data to the heart of N Brown. You will be part of Group Data and will focus on exploring solutions to maintain, improve, and scale our use of data.

What will you do as a Lead Data Engineer at N Brown?

  • Take full ownership of data transformations, ensuring seamless and strategic integration across GCP, BigQuery, and legacy systems.
  • Lead a team an established team of data engineers in analytics engineering fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
  • Establish and enforce SQL and dbt standards for consistent, high-quality data transformation.
  • Translate stakeholder requirements into scalable data models for actionable insights.
  • Develop robust data models to drive analysis in the ecommerce, fashion, and financial services sectors.
  • Optimise data processes using GCP services for peak performance and reliability.
  • Create comprehensive documentation for data models and pipelines to enhance stakeholder understanding.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot data pipelines, ensuring data integrity and timely issue resolution.
  • Embed data governance, security compliance, and safeguard sensitive data within your teams practises.
  • Stay ahead with GCP and dbt developments to continually advance data engineering practices.
  • Coach your team in best practice and coding standards. Work with the wider Data Engineering and Group Data team to share ways of working.
  • You will be working in an agile operating model with cross-functional teams

What skills and experience will you have?

  • Experience with general Cloud products (Cloud SQL, BigQuery, RedShift, Snowflake) or similar products.
  • Experience with open-source data-stack tools such as Airflow, DBT, Dataform, Kafka etc.
  • Awareness of data visualisation tools such as PowerBI, Tableau and/or Looker
  • Knowledge of Teradata, Mainframe and/or Google Analytics is beneficial.
  • Appreciation of data governance, data management, analytics, science, and visualisation workflows and data needs
  • Appreciation of the modern cloud data stack, headless BI, analytics engineering, data meshes and lake-houses
  • Mastery in SQL and extensive experience with dbt for efficient data modelling and transformation.
  • Solid experience in Cloud Platforms, with MPP such as BigQuery, Snowflake, Redshift is essential with preference being GCP and related products and or services.
  • Leadership in data engineering best practices, ensuring quality in data transformation and modelling.
  • Proficiency in orchestrating data workflows using Google Cloud Composer for seamless data integration.
  • Strong communicator, able to translate complex data concepts to non-technical stakeholders and vice versa.
  • Familiar with integrating data from legacy (e.g., Teradata, Mainframe) and modern data sources.
  • Committed to data quality and governance, especially in handling sensitive financial data securely.
  • Creative problem-solver, optimising data processes for efficiency and insightful data generation.
  • Experience with Agile development practices and tools like Jira and Confluence for effective project management.
  • Eager for continuous learning, adopting the latest in data engineering technologies and practices.

Ways of Working

We offer hybrid working which varies across the business depending on the role you’re in. For this role, the expectation would be once every other week. Our Head Office is located in the Northern Quarter in Manchester City Centre. So if you are travelling by train, tram or bus we’re perfectly located, plus we’re surrounded by cool cafes, trendy bars and the best places to eat!

Our working hours are 36.17 per week and our core working hours are between 10am - 4pm. Given we don’t have strict working hours you can find the working pattern that’s right for you.
